Grant Writing

Additional Tips for Writing a Grant:

  • Academic Promotion

    • Listing grants that you have either received or applied on your CV looks good for academic promotion. It shows initiative and having funds can help you get your foot in the door to ask for what you want.

      • These grants can even be as small as travel grants; this still shows initiative!

      • It is normal to list 1 funded grant and 10 non-funded grants. It is difficult to be funded, but at least you can show that are trying.

    • Don’t list non-published submitted manuscripts on your CV

  • Where to Look for Funding

    • Chose to apply to grants that you resonate with the mission

    • Try not to overshoot or undershoot; it takes time to write a grant, so you want to try to find one that is worth while - time is valuable!

    • Some missions may be vague like “save the world”. In these cases, you may try to call or contact the Director of the grant to inquire if you would be a good fit

      • Be clear about what you want to do with the funding and the Director may help you to a more fitting grant or ask you to apply for their grant
